Abscess treatment in Inflammatory Bowel disease
Recently, I have been approached by a few people with abscesses who have been asking me about more natural remedies to heal them a bit faster. I have also been seeing an increase in these types of infections at the hospital where I am a nurse due to dog bites and motor vehicle accidents. Essential oils can do that and I am all to happy to help! Essential oils can be very good at drawing out infection and healing these large holes of pus and fluid from the inside out, and they can do it quickly.
What is an abscess?
Web MD describes an abscess as a pocket of pus or body fluid that is enclosed under the skin or somewhere in the body and is infected. This pocket of infection can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. The abscess usually will drain through an opening either made by a doctors incision or a pore. They can occur in anyone and for all different reasons. Some people get them in their armpits because of the constant friction. Others get them on their faces because of large pores that fill with bacteria and cause infection. There are wounds that turn into abscesses, like dog bites or some kind of trauma to an area that gets infected and turns into an abscess.
People with inflammatory bowel disease can get them from pockets of infection inside their intestines. They can also get them due to their immune system being suppressed from medications or just the disease itself. Sometimes they occur in the perianal area from excessive diarrhea or perianal disease.
How is an abscess usually treated?
Typically, an abscess is treated with antibiotics orally and topically. A surgeon or physician can make an incision and drain the abscess of the debris and pus to relieve the pressure if it is causing a lot of discomfort. Then they will sometimes, if it is big enough, chose to pack it with sterile gauze and allow it to heal from the inside out. The patient would need to have it repacked daily or every so often to allow healing. It can be a long and painful process.
How can I use essential oils to heal the abscess faster?
Essential oil blends have been proven to be very effective for abscesses and can help heal them much faster and easier than just antibiotics alone. Using a carrier like witch hazel will also help decrease the swelling and inflammation around the abscess.
What essential oils can I use for an abscess?
I would recommend using oils that are anti-inflammatory in nature and have purification and infection fighting properties. Oils like tea tree (maleluca), copaiba ,frankisence, lemongrass, clove and lavender all have those qualities and when combined and used daily can certainly help draw out the infection and allow the wound to heal nicely.
I posted a little while back on the use of essential oils for sebaceous cysts. I had an infected sebaceous cyst that due to Remade for Crohn’s disease I couldn’t get to heal. It just kept getting worse and worse. I finally started to use my essential oils and it healed very quickly and hasn’t ever come back. I included before and after pictures in that post. It was pretty remarkable how well the oils worked.
I also posted a little while back about a wound infection that I had after an intestinal resection surgery and how essential oils saved me from antibiotics there too. They are certainly a blessing to have and I am just scratching the surface with using them, but loving them so far!
