There has been a buzz about colloidal silver among holistic practitioners lately. People are searching for alternative methods to helps fight infection and various ailments. Colloidal silver is known for its anti-bacterial properties and is widely used for infections. There are many medical doctors who will use silver to treat skin wounds such as burns or severe infections. It also can be used for viruses, even ones as severe as HIV or Hepatitis C.
I was introduced to colloidal silver about 3 year ago when I was first diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. My chiropractor mentioned it to me as something that might help me heal my gut and I did a lot of research on it. Eventually I bought myself a bottle and tried it out, and I am glad that I did!
Colloidal Silver has been around for centuries. It was often used in ancient times for various ailments and it was considered sacred. In the 1940’s, with the advances in modern medicine, and the use of antibiotic pills, silver was pushed to the background as it wasn’t as quickly effective as the new medicines. However, that doesn’t mean that it is not still a great tool to have in your medicine cabinet.
Colloidal silver is exactly what you would think it would be. It is silver. Before modernization people would put silver coins in water and bathe in it or drink it for the silver’s properties to heal and help prevent infection. Today you can purchase colloidal silver at grocery stores, in pharmacies, or online, and have it on hand whenever the need for it should arise.
It is made through a process called electrolysis. Electrolysis is a process in which an electrical current is used to start a chemical reaction in 2 substances. With one of those substances being water the other substance’s elements will separate out of the cells and are then suspended in the water. When this is done with silver is creates colloidal silver which is water with silver particles floating around in it.
You can ingest colloidal silver, inhale it (as in a nebulizer or diffuse), or apply it directly to a wound, or just on the skin. The particles of silver are highly absorbable and can be applied to the skin and make it into the blood stream but for general body infections or to make it into circulation ingestion or inhalation are the best routes. The silver ions will absorb into the blood stream through the lungs or digestive tract (some can absorb under the tongue) and be excreted relatively quickly through the kidneys and then through the urine or feces.
You can use colloidal silver for all kinds of ailments from sinus infections to wounds or ulceration of the skin to pneumonia. There are some reports of people using this for cancer and even HIV. Silver doesn’t not care what kind of bacteria is in your body, it can and will kill it. This is different from modern medicine that will target certain strains of bacteria or viruses.
I have successfully used colloidal silver for skin ulcerations and sinus infections. I experience lovely skin ulcers when my disease is active. I get them all over my hands, arms and legs. I don’t know why I get them. There have been doctors that tell me that when I have ulcerations going on in my intestines I get them on my skin, but who knows for sure. They can get pretty big and bleed as well as get infected easily so I use the colloidal silver to keep them from getting infected and it also seems to heal them somewhat faster than if I just left them or used an antibiotic ointment. I also combine the colloidal silver with my essential oil blend (see that post here) and use them alternatively. I tend only use the colloidal silver on the largest and scariest looking ulcerations that I get, but that is only because I like to save it for the most problematic issues and my essential oils work really well for the little ones.
I also tend to get sinus infections regularly. With being on Remicade at the moment my immune system is down and I already had a tendency to get sinus infections so I love my colloidal silver for that. I simple diffuse it with my essential oil diffuser and breathe it in through my nose. I works wonders and has saved me from antibiotics a few times. There are times when I really need the antibiotics and I will take them if needed, but I try to avoid using them very often.
I have tried ingesting colloidal silver for my crohn’s sympotms. I took it for about 2 months consistently and noticed that I had a lot less gas and bloating. However, it was not a magical cure and it did not promote enough healing for me to not need medications. I still use it when needed for gas and bloating. It is much better than anything else I have tried for those symptoms.
The short answer to this is no, you will not turn blue. The long answer is that when there are too much silver colloids in the body you can notice a blue hugh to the skin. When there is an over abundance and the body can not clear them quick enough, you can, indeed, turn blue. There have been cases where people have had blue tints creep into their skin and it is noticeable but this is rare. You have to have a build up of silver in the body. Most of these people are taking too much of it at a time or trying to make their own at home and there are too many silver molecules in their dilution. When you purchase it, purchase a reputable brand and follow the dosing instructions on the bottle. Turning blue is not something that will cause damage to anything in your body but it is a scary side effect so be careful with dosing.
Overall I feel that colloidal silver can be beneficial for many people, not just those that are diagnosed and struggling with inflammatory bowel disease. However, I do not believe that it is a ‘cure’ for this disease. It can certainly decrease uncomfortable symptoms and help maintain health with dealing with immuno-suppressive drugs. So, as I always say, do your research and let me know how you do with any of these remedies 🙂
