Is Diet an Effective Tool for Crohn’s Disease? Let’s find out!
Dine-CD Study http://dinecd.web.unc.edu/
Hi Everyone, I am sorry for the my long absence. Things have been crazy busy at my house. School is starting for my two little ones and all of our fall activities are in full swing, I am back at work after summer break and all this while still constantly trying to manage my active Crohn’s disease.
I wanted to write about some exciting news, there is a new medical study for Crohn’s disease sufferers that I was asked to be a part of!
At my last GI appointment my doctor mentioned this study to me and let me know that he thought I would be a good candidate for it. It is being funded by and done out of the University of Pennsylvania. It is a randomized diet study investigating the effectiveness of either the Mediterranean diet or the SCD (specific carbohydrate diet) and their affects on Crohn’s Disease.
I am a HUGE supporter of diet and natural ways to manage my Crohn’s disease. There are so many people out there that tout how diet has radically changed the course of their disease. Some people even say that it has ‘cured’ them. I always wonder how that can be, as my disease has NEVER been in clinical remission, no matter what I try.
The last study that I participated in (find those blog posts here) was a great success for me and I am very excited to try one of these diets to see if they’ll make an impact on my Crohn’s disease.
I have tried diets in the past with some success but never enough to keep me off of medications. I have always had a hard time keeping with the strict guidelines of diets and usually end up giving up after a few days or weeks. I am super excited to start this study and see how the diet affects me. I feel like then I will know for sure if diet REALLY does play a role in my Crohn’s disease. Please follow along with me. I will be sure to blog about each process and how I am feeing.
The study is split into two phases, each being 6 weeks long. They will be studying the effectiveness of the diet on the disease symptoms and progress as well as the patient’s ability to maintain the diet on their own.
I have already been approved for the preliminary parts of the study. I have to go into the hospital at the end of this week for the physical given by the physicians over seeing the study and be randomized into the trial. I will not get to pick which diet I will be on, it will be randomly assigned. I will either be starting on the SCD (specific carbohydrate diet) or the Mediterranean diet.
The first 6 weeks of the trial the researchers will be providing my with all the food that I will be allowed to eat. After those 6 weeks I will have to follow the diet strictly on my own. The study will then determine the effectiveness of the diet on my Crohn’s disease with stool samples, blood samples and at the end I will undergo a colonoscopy.
Once I know a little more about the study and what diet I am going to be on, I will write more. For now, I am praying that this helps my symptoms a lot! Thank you for reading. I hope that this helps a lot of people and that I can be a guinea pig for us.
CHECK BACK to find out which DIET I have been put on
Check back to see which diet I end up being on and how my symptoms are doing!
In my next post I will detail my current symptoms and discuss what diet I am going to be starting and the details of it.
