Essential Oils for inflammatory bowel disease
When I was first diagnosed with Crohn’s I was very resistant to pharmaceuticals. I wanted to try as many natural methods as I could before giving any heavy duty drugs like a biologic drug a try. One of the first things that I tried was essential oils. I already knew a little about them but after my diagnosis I dove deeper into how much they really could help me. I learned a lot about them and even start selling them through Young Living. Through my research I found that Young Living has the purest formula and also offers the most variety of essential oils, in my opinion.
In the long run they didn’t heal me completely but now that I am on some higher potency drugs they have proven to be extremely useful for side effect relief and a host of other things. I can’t see myself ever going without them again. In this blog post I want to discuss how I was skeptical about these healing oils and how I took the plunge and tried essential oils. If you are skeptical too, or maybe just learning about all the ways that essential oils can be beneficial for you, please keep reading!
They help me in all kinds of ways, I use a formula for hair loss from the medication that I am on. I use them to help promote restful sleep when I am on steroids or just anxious, I use them to boost my mood when I am feeing down. I also have used them successfully at beating UTI’s without antibiotics. However, the biggest thing that I wanted to share with you is how they helped me recovery from a bowel resection surgery. If I wasn’t a believer in essential oils before this incident I am now!
I ended up with a bowel obstruction a few months back and needed to have emergency surgery to resect the bowel. The surgery was successful and done laparoscopically. When I got home my central incision (the one that ran down my abdomen through my belly button) became infected.
The picture below is what it looked like when it was infected, before any essential oils had been used. As you can see, my abdomen was puffy there was significant streaking and the belly button and surrounding incision was leaking pus and blood constantly, not to mention the pain that this thing caused me.
I spoke to my surgeon who wanted to give me a course of antibiotics. I decided to start using my essential oils before using anything else and just see what happened. So that night I used a combination of lavender, frankincense, melaleuca with witch hazel as my carrier. I woke up the very next day and could not be
lieve what I saw! As seen in the picture below, the streaking from the infection was almost gone, the drainage was now clear, the pain was almost completely gone and my stomach was less puffy and sore.
After that initial night I used my healing combo for a week and it healed up fantastically!
The picture below is what is looks like today. I don’t believe that it would have healed this nicely without my essential oils! I am FOR SURE a believe now!
So, what are Essential Oils?
The technical definition of essential oils is “a natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source fro
m which it is extracted.” This basically means that a plant is broken down and the oils are extracted to be used for any number of things. They can be used for anything from cleaning your bathroom to washing your hair to applying to wounds, even homemade sunscreen! The oils are made by distilling or steaming the plants and are therapeutic and contain the true essence of the plant making them highly concentrated and STRONG!
What are the uses for Essential Oils?
There are unlimited uses for essential oils. I have used them for many things including…
~sunscreen (i would highly recommend this!)
~UTI symptoms relief
~bath time relaxation aid
There are many many more but I won’t list them all here.
Essential oils can play a big role in helping someone who suffers with inflammatory bowel disease. They claim to be able to significantly minimize side effects of drugs and help tremendously with healing and quality of life. They have been used for ages and ages, dating back to biblical times. We all know that the three wisemen brought Christ oils (frankincense and myrrh) and that they were widely used and basically revered even during the early Egyptian times. Royalty in any country would sometimes be the only ones able to afford to use these oils. They brought health and peace to the sick and aided to wounded. If you do any research at all you will find that all throughout history essential oils have been used to help people with all different kinds of ailments.
I want to help anyone who is considering using them by explaining what they are and how they work. I want to encourage you to do your research on them and decide if they are right for you and offer some insight along the way.
