flora school
flora school
everything nobody taught you about your own body.
a 5-minute education that should have happened years ago. no shame, no jargon, no lectures.
lesson 1 — your vagina has a microbiome
billions of good bacteria (mostly lactobacillus) live there, producing lactic acid that keeps the environment slightly acidic — around ph 3.8–4.5. that acidity is your natural defense system. when it holds, harmful bacteria can't take over. when it shifts, they can. that's it. that's the whole game.
lesson 2 — what knocks it out of balance
sex — semen is alkaline (ph 7–8) and shifts your acidity for hours
antibiotics — they kill bad bacteria and your protective ones
your period — blood is alkaline too; many women feel "off" right after
stress & hormones — cortisol and estrogen swings change the environment
douching & scented washes — marketed as the fix, actually a common cause
lesson 3 — why the cycle keeps repeating
antibiotics treat the infection — they don't rebuild the flora that prevents the next one. that's why studies show up to 80% of women see bv return within a year. you're not doing anything wrong. the tool you were given does a different job.
treatment kills. prevention rebuilds. you need both — but only one of them is in your daily control.
lesson 4 — myths, busted
"it's a hygiene problem." no. over-washing makes it worse. balance, not scrubbing.
"every woman just deals with it." common ≠ normal. recurring infections are a flora problem, and flora can be supported.
"my gut probiotic covers it." different microbiome, different job. generic gut strains weren't built for this.
"gummies aren't serious." the best probiotic is the one you take every single day. consistency beats format snobbery.
when to see a doctor (really)
bloom is daily prevention — it is not a treatment. if you have symptoms right now (unusual discharge, strong odor, itching, burning, pain), see your provider first. treat the infection, then build the routine that keeps it from coming back. that's the smart order of operations.
class dismissed. flora on.
